Pittsburgh's Growing Technology Industry Clusters are a Keystone of the Local Economy
Pittsburgh and the surrounding region's technology industry is anchored with four industry clusters -- Information Technology, Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing and Environmental Technology -- that have played a significant role in the regional economy's renaissance. These clusters are at the very core of the industry's overall impact on the economy. Pittsburgh and the surrounding region are home to more than 7,200 technology companies now, employing some 207,000 people. That's 17.5 percent of the workforce accounting for approximately $10.8 billion in payroll.
Over the past 25 years, the Pittsburgh region has transformed itself into a recognized center of excellence in Information Technology, Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing and Environmental Technology.
The IT cluster covers businesses that design and make computer hardware/software and telecommunications services/technologies. The cluster's annual payroll is now tipping $2 billion. The Life Sciences cluster includes health services, bio research, devices, pharma and medical equipment companies. The cluster some 3,200 firms employing 117,000 with a $5.8 billion payroll.
Advanced Manufacturing is where IT and manufacturing intersect. This cluster has ventures that are highly automated and employ a high degree of process control. The annual payroll is $1 billion. The Environmental Technology cluster includes companies that fall into environmental equipment, services/research and remediation. This cluster's payroll has increased to $2 billion.
If the region is to continue to build its technology base, it must look toward the future and pinpoint current industry niches and strengths with the potential to grow into economic generators. The Pittsburgh Technology Council has identified 12 such emerging cluster as part of its State of the Industry Report. The emerging clusters include: Cybersecurity, Data Storage, Electro-Optics, Energy Technology, Entertainment Technology, Nanotechnology, Microelectromechanical Systems, Robotics, Specialty Metals, Supercomputing, System-on-a-Chip and Tissue Engineering.
