Overview
Innovation Works is one of the nation's most active investors in seed-stage technology companies and has invested in more start-ups in Pittsburgh than any other public or private source. Since the seed fund's inception in 1999, Innovation Works has invested more than $40 million in over 120 promising start-ups in information technology and software, robotics, life sciences, advanced materials, clean energy, consumer electronics and other technology sectors that have helped diversify and stabilize Pittsburgh's economy. While Innovation Works invests an average of two years prior to venture capitalists, the Innovation Works portfolio companies have raised more than $625 million in private financing. In 2008, 70% of all venture capital deals in the region went to companies that started with Innovation Works' seed funding. Innovation Works helps commercialize the world class research spinning out of Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), the R & D centers of major corporations, and the creativity of first-time and serial entrepreneurs. This robust pipeline of cutting edge technology makes Pittsburgh - and the Innovation Works portfolio - the place to look for an economic transformation based on entrepreneurship, innovation, and creative financing. Recently, Innovation Works launched AlphaLab, a business accelerator specifically for Web-related and entertainment technology companies. AlphaLab provides up to 12 companies per year with investment, office space, intense mentoring and access to funders.
