Pittsburgh is dubbed a "Top 10 Up-and-Coming Tech City" by Forbes magazine and is No. 1 in the nation for venture capital growth during the last 10 years. From big names to start-ups, we have innovative companies, top-ranked universities and a robust network of industry support organizations that are bringing Pittsburgh-grown technologies to the world.

Carnegie Mellon University continues to be a trailblazer in the tech fields of tomorrow, including agile robotics, cybersecurity, electro-optics and networking hardware. The university offers top-ranked programs in artificial intelligence, computer science, computer engineering and other areas. This consistently positions our region at the forefront of groundbreaking global research - from tech-transfer with private sector leaders, to federal government partnerships on critical defense and security-related projects.

Carnegie Mellon's federally-funded Software Engineering Institute is home to the CERT Coordination Center, the ground-zero of internet security. Meanwhile, the Robotics Institute - one reason The Wall Street Journal dubbed the region "Roboburgh" - has been leading the world in integrating robotic technologies into everyday life since its founding in 1979. It has more than 50 full-time faculty members who are advancing the state of the art in sub-fields like space-robotics, computer graphics, medical robotics, computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Technology and advanced manufacturing come to together to produce innovative results at Penn State University's Electro-Optics Center (EOC). Created in partnership with the Office of Naval Research, it is a national resource for advancing electro-optics and related technologies. The EOC partners with government and commercial customers to develop state-of-the-art systems, components and materials to primarily benefit U.S. defense forces.
