Overview
Founded in 1976, Philips Respironics has put Murrysville, Pennsylvania on the map as a hub for innovative home healthcare solutions within the sleep and respiratory care industries. The company is recognized for its role in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition that causes 18 - 20 million Americans to stop breathing repeatedly during sleep. Beginning as an entrepreneurial venture, Respironics has grown with more than 5,200 associates worldwide. A testament to Respironics success, in 2008 the company was acquired by Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) to become the foundation of Philips Home Healthcare Solutions. A top employer in the Pittsburgh region, Philips Respironics recently added a 165,000 square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to its local operation network.
Philips Respironics expertise goes beyond manufacturing to inventing products and developing solutions to improve patient's lives. Respironics revolutionized sleep therapy by introducing the first commercial continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device in 1986, and soon after, developed and patented BiPAP bi-level technology. The company strives to raise awareness about the importance of sleep and respiratory conditions through community and national efforts. Philips Respironics is providing ongoing support for NBC's The Biggest Loser television show with medical equipment, testing, treatment and therapy for contestants who are diagnosed with OSA. In addition, the company supports respiratory patients by conducting research, advocating and loaning devices to various organizations.
