Astorino: Architecture for Work, Play and Life

Synopsis
From the new arena for the 2009 Stanley Cup championship-winning Pittsburgh Penguins to the training facility for the Steelers and PNC Park, Astorino is creating sports facilities for a city that is passionate about its world-renowned teams. Longtime believers that the work environment has a direct impact on creativity and productivity, Pittsburgh architecture, design and engineering firm Astorino has created beautiful, functional workspaces for a number of key employers in the area over the past 30 years. Astorino also boasts $1 billion worth of completed design projects at major commercial hubs - such as PNC Firstside Center, Three PNC Plaza, Bakery Square at Eastide and Port Authority of Allegheny County - examples of unique, mixed-use spaces that seamlessly blend work, nature and culture.

Overview
Noteworthy Astorino projects within the Pittsburgh area include:

PNC Park - With the Pittsburgh skyline as a backdrop and the highest seat just 88 feet from the field, the design of the Pittsburgh Pirate's stadium (by Astorino with Populous) has won countless accolades and been called one of the best venues in all of baseball.

Consol Energy Arena (with Populous) - In 2010, the Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins will move from one of the oldest arenas in the NHL into their new home. The arena pays respect to Pittsburgh greats like Mario Lemieux, but contains up-to-the-minute design features that befit the new champions and their future. The arena is also targeting LEED® certification.

UPMC - Sports Performance Complex - Even though the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and Super 2009 Super Bowl winners Pittsburgh Steelers play at Heinz field, they practice at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. The space is recognized as one of the best training facilities in the U.S.

PNC Firstside Center - This building became the city's first ever to receive a Silver LEED® rating - starting a sustainable trend that has become the city's crowning urban development accomplishment. Astorino (with Gensler) designed Three PNC Plaza - a 23-story building, including 30 luxury condominiums, a 185-room hotel and 361,00-square-feet of office space - the city's first downtown skyscraper in a decade. This building is currently awaiting LEED® certification.

Bakery Square at Eastside - Developer Walnut Capital had Astorino provide planning, architectural, engineering and landscape services for this historic redevelopment of a former Nabisco factory, now a new, LEED®-certified mixed-use lifestyle center that includes 380,000-square-feet of office and retail space, 120 hotel rooms and an 800-space parking garage.

Port Authority of Allegheny County - Astorino renovated two floors of the Gimbel's Landmark Building to house the administrative offices of the Allegheny Port Authority. The contemporary design utilizes multiple finishes, painted wall patterns, glass walls, cork tile flooring and natural lighting - which received acclaim with the relocated employees.

Astorino also designed the Trimont, with its spectacular view of Pittsburgh's famed Golden Triangle; the new expansion to the Senator John Heinz History Center downtown; The Metropolitan Shadyside and many more landmark Pittsburgh developments.
