Synopsis
CONSOL Energy is the largest producer of high-Btu bituminous coal in the United States and a leader in the production of coalbed methane gas. The company is also an innovator - operating the largest private research and development facility devoted exclusively to coal and energy utilization and production. With major projects including coal gasification and carbon sequestration underway, CONSOL Energy is applying tomorrow's technology today in order to bring our nation closer to energy independence.
Overview
Started in 1864, CONSOL Energy is the largest producer of high-Btu bituminous coal in the United States and has more than six decades of coal in reserves. A multi-faceted energy company, CONSOL Energy is also one of the largest independent natural gas exploration, development, production and gathering companies in the country. Combined, these fossil fuels power two-thirds of the United States electricity allowing the country to consistently remain productive and prosperous.
To continue to effectively and responsibly produce the coal and natural gas critical to maintaining the American way of life, CONSOL Energy operates the largest private research and development facilities devoted exclusively to their utilization and production. Through partnerships with the U.S. Department of Energy and other government and private agencies, CONSOL Energy is applying tomorrow's technology today in order to bring our nation closer to energy independence. These studies are examining mercury emissions from power plants and the sequestration of carbon dioxide in unmineable coal seams. They are also working to develop technological advances in controlling power plant emissions and methane emissions from mines and drilling sites to address concerns about greenhouse gas, with the goal of helping establish a sound scientific basis for energy and environmental policies.
