How a Former Accountancy School Transformed into a Large Private University, with Students from Most of the G20 Countries

Founded in 1921 as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy, the former downtown institution has grown into a private university, now sitting on a 230-acre former estate purchased from the brother of Edgar Kaufmann, the man who lived in Frank Lloyd Wright's legendary Fallingwater. Named for a wealthy financier who helped to fund the American army during the Revolutionary War, Robert Morris University has 5,000 students and offers 60 undergraduate programs and 20 graduate programs.

Under the direction of President Gregory Dell'Omo, students are encouraged to develop perspective through study abroad. Visiting international scholars spend a semester on campus as part of a program created with the support of university trustee Patricia Rooney, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, Dan Rooney.

RMU's Pittsburgh Speakers Series brings important international guests to the city for public lectures, including Paul Rusesabagina of Rwanda, Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, Salman Rushdie of Great Britain, Ehud Barak of Israel, and Jean-Michel Cousteau of France.

The campus continues to blossom since attaining university status in 2002, with a new football stadium, an apartment-style residence hall, and major renovations to dormitories and classrooms. RMU is now preparing to break ground on a new business school with a state-of-the-art simulated stock trading floor; the university is also raising money to build a medical simulation center. Students can participate in 90 clubs and organizations, and a competitive athletics program that boasts 23 NCAA Division I men's and women's teams and numerous division titles and championships.

RMU is a teaching-centered institution, featuring small classes taught by professors and a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. Full-time faculty has doubled in less than a decade. The RMU School of Business, still a regional leader, now shares space on campus with schools of Communication and Information Science; Education and Social Science; Nursing and Health Science; and Engineering, Mathematics, and Science.
