Point Park University Fuels Pittsburgh's Cultural Landscape
Point Park University is a major contributor to the cultural arts in Pittsburgh both in the talent it produces, as well as the critically acclaimed programs it attracts. Its Pittsburgh Playhouse maintains a rigorous performance calendar with 18 major productions and 235 performances, entertaining more than 30,000 patrons annually. Additionally, it boasts one of the top ten dance programs in the country and its alumni range from Tony-award winning choreographers to stars on Broadway.
As one of the top programs of its kind in the nation, Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA) combines hands-on performance experience and rigorous training with internationally recognized master teachers, directors and choreographers. With a dance program ranked among the top ten in the country, students train with instructors who have studied with notable dance figures such as Balanchine, Luigi, Alvin Ailey, Stanely Williams, Martha Graham, Leon Fokine and many more.
Additionally, the Pittsburgh Playhouse serves as the performing arts center of Point Park University and the Conservatory of Performing Arts. The three-theater performing arts center, which will move to its new home in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh in 2010, is the home to The REP, the professional theatre company and three student companies.
A few of notable alumni include: Anthony Hollock, star of Broadway's Hair; Rob Ashford who not only won a Tony Award for Best Choreography in 2002 for his first Broadway show, Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002), but choreographed the opening number at this year's Tony Awards; and Keisha Lalama White, Pittsburgh's CLO Education Director, Point Park University's COPA faculty member and one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" for 2009(Each is available for interview).
