Point Park University Revitalizes Downtown Pittsburgh

Point Park University, a private university with a strong liberal arts tradition located in the heart of downtown, announced plans for The Academic Village at Point Park University - a $244 million investment that will transform its campus and downtown Pittsburgh into a sustainable, dynamic urban community. As one of the largest property owners in the city, Point Park has established itself as a leader in the redevelopment of downtown Pittsburgh.

The Academic Village at Point Park University will bring new cultural and academic facilities, architectural and streetscape improvements, and greater economic opportunity. Some of the recent highlights include:

  • A state-of-the-art, Gold LEED® certified dance complex - the only building of its kind in the country to achieve such status - which serves the nationally recognized Point Park University Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA)
  • The purchase of several near-foreclosure downtown buildings and their transformation into student housing and academic facilities
  • Introduction of an urban park and streetscape enhancements, such as the addition of trees, banners, façade lighting, trash receptacles and paving to create pedestrian throughways
  • The construction of a new, green Pittsburgh Playhouse in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's economy directly benefits as a result of this significant investment. In fact, according to a recent economic impact study conducted by the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania, this initiative will add nearly $280 million in total value to the economy, almost $500 million in economic output and generate 3,700 full- and part-time jobs.
