Carnegie Learning, Inc. is a leader in innovative, research-based mathematics curricula for middle school, high school, and post-secondary students. Evolved from two decades of cognitive science research at Carnegie Mellon University on how students think, learn, and apply new knowledge in math, Carnegie Learning develops rigorous textbook and software curricula, formative assessments, and Professional Development programs that help students meet the education and workforce demands of the 21st Century. Our solutions are helping 500,000 students in 2,600 schools across the U.S. to succeed in math in districts including Miami-Dade, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and The Recovery School District, and in state-wide initiatives in Kentucky, Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, and Louisiana.
Carnegie Learning® Bridge to Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II address the basal and supplemental math requirements for middle school, high school, and post-secondary students. The curricula are aligned to all state standards, as well as to the five content strands of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards, and are reviewed extensively by third party researchers. The U.S. Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified a study of our Algebra I solution as one of the very few studies to show significant, positive effects on learning and student attitudes in a strong experimental design. Based upon this evidence of effectiveness, the U.S. Department of Education is funding a $6 million study of Carnegie Learning® Algebra I software conducted by the RAND Corporation. Implemented in six diverse regions nationwide, the primary research objective is to measure the curriculum's effects on students' mathematics achievement.
Software. Carnegie Learning Cognitive Tutor® software uses an artificial intelligence model that identifies strengths and weaknesses in each individual's understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures and focuses on areas where the student is struggling. We use real-world situations in our math problems to help students see how math is relevant in our lives.
Carnegie Learning curricula and research are receiving international recognition. In July 2009, cognitive scientists and research assistants received "Best Paper" at EDM '09, the Second International Conference on Education Data Mining in Cordoba, Spain for "Reducing the Knowledge Tracing Space", which demonstrates one way to more efficiently model student learning of cognitive skills.
In May 2009, Carnegie Learning® Adaptive Math Software won a CODiE Award from the Software + Information Industry Association as Best Mathematics Instructional Solution. This is the third CODiE Award received in the last four years.
In May 2009 Carnegie Learning, Inc. received a Best in Tech Award for the 2008-2009 school year from Scholastic Administrator Magazine. This competitive national award recognizes Carnegie Learning® Math programs as a leading Supplemental Math Solution.
