Overview
United States Steel Corporation has maintained a presence in the Pittsburgh area for more than 100 years. Our Vision - Making Steel. World Competitive. Building Value. - is supported by a series of core values within the company, one of which is environmental stewardship. It is our commitment to sustainability that drives us to adopt management systems and best practices that foster continuous improvement in our processes, preserving vital resources and ensuring the future of the industry.
We are making meaningful strides in reducing our energy consumption and our greenhouse gas emissions, as a company and within the industry as a whole. The North American steel industry's greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by nearly 45 percent per ton of steel shipped since 1975, and air and water emissions are 90 percent lower today than 10 years ago. This is because of efforts like the ones U. S. Steel employs by using the byproduct gas produced in our blast furnaces and coke ovens in the place of natural gas - saving valuable energy that would otherwise be wasted. Many other byproducts generated in integrated steelmaking plants like ours can be recycled and used for other applications both inside and outside our facilities.
As the world's most recycled material, steel provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to practice environmental stewardship. In 2006, nearly 70 million tons of steel were recycled in the United States, and more steel is recycled annually in North America than aluminum, glass, and paper combined.
