The Bayer Pittsburgh story began with one small office building. Since then, Bayer has been an integral part of the Pittsburgh community for 50 years. And just as Pittsburgh has evolved from the Steel City to America's Most Livable City, so too, Bayer's businesses and name have evolved over the years, with several mergers and acquisitions leading to the creation of Bayer Corporation in 1995. Pittsburgh serves as the headquarters of Bayer Corporation, Bayer Business and Technology Services LLC and Bayer HealthCare affiliate MEDRAD, Inc., as well as the NAFTA headquarters for Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

Bayer CropScience is one of the world's leading crop science companies in the areas of crop protection, non-agricultural pest control, seeds and plant biotechnology. Bayer HealthCare focuses on innovative products that will improve human and animal health. For example, its Pittsburgh-based MEDRAD affiliate is a leading provider of medical devices and services that enable and enhance imaging procedures of the human body. Bayer Material Science is one of the world's largest producers of polymers and high-performance plastics.

Throughout Bayer's evolution, a constant has been and continues to be the organization's strong commitment to the Pittsburgh community. Today, Bayer is part of the chemicals industry that generates some $3.4 billion in the local economy. Bayer has roughly 2,700 employees in the Pittsburgh area - 1,500 on its U.S. headquarter campus and 1,200 at MEDRAD.

Bayer also is a major supporter of the community through volunteer programs such as BASIC (Bayer Association for Science in Communities), a part of Bayer's award-winning Making Science Make Sense® science literacy initiative. Bayer also spearheaded the nationally known science program, ASSET Inc. (Achieving Student Success Through Excellence in Teaching), which has grown from two pilot districts to approximately 40 member school districts.
