Allegheny Ludlum's $1.2 Billion Investment Helps Specialty Metals Thrive
Pittsburgh- the Steel City-was once known for rising smokestacks and tireless fiery blast furnaces illuminating the shores of her three rivers. Decades later the smoke has cleared and the same shores once dominated by the steel industry have become home to technology centers, retail destinations, and scenic residential communities. One would think this once booming industry is all but extinct, but on closer examination pockets of the proud skilled steel workforce abound and thrive in today's specialty metals market place.
Along the northern corner of Allegheny County sits the Allegheny Ludlum, Brackenridge Hot Strip Mill. A subsidiary of Allegheny Technologies, Inc (ATI), Allegheny Ludlum Company has a long history in southwestern Pennsylvania. This past fall, ATI announced its commitment to the region when it released plans for an expansion of its Ludlum hot strip mill facility located in Brackenridge, PA.
The Ludlum expansion project is estimated to cost approximately $1.16 billion, and take four years to complete. Approximately 1,500 jobs will be retained in the Brackenridge area, and a projected 75 new jobs will be created. Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI) has approximately 6,423 full-time employees world-wide who use innovative technologies to offer growing global markets a wide range of specialty metals solutions.
The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County (RAAC) has agreed to incur costs for the realignment of two public roadways, River Road and Mile Lock Lane, and oversee the relocation of all utilities under the public rights of way. The estimated cost of the road construction and utility relocation is projected to be near $3 million.
ATI has proven to be a sustainable company throughout its 107 year history of being headquartered in Western Pennsylvania. ATI's major markets are aerospace and defense, chemical process industry/oil and gas, electrical energy, medical, automotive, food equipment and appliance, machine and cutting tools, and construction and mining.
This project has major significance in light of the current volatility in the specialty metal market. Despite the recent market downturn ATI is moving forward with the project, confident they will be ahead of their competition once the markets rebound.
