Alcoa's History of Innovation Started in Pittsburgh
Alcoa has been inventing the future in Pittsburgh since 1888, when Charles Martin Hall invented the process for making aluminum. Hall founded The Pittsburgh Reduction Company, which later became Alcoa. As the G-20 Summit takes place in Pittsburgh, Alcoa will be celebrating its 120th anniversary and its 50th year as a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (the Dow).
Today, Alcoa owns the world's largest light metals research and development center - Alcoa Technical Center - located in New Kensington, just outside of Pittsburgh. The firm holds more than 2,600 active patents. Each year, 1% of the company's revenues are invested in Research & Development, to continue to build a foundation for Alcoa's future.
There may not be any other company in the world that is as much an economic bellwether as Alcoa. Today, Alcoa is the world's leading producer and manager of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina facilities, and serves customers in the aerospace, automotive, building and construction, commercial transportation and industrial markets. Alcoa solutions have helped land men on the moon; make every day flight and travel possible; protect soldiers and military vehicles; build more "green" buildings; and design lighter-weight automobiles, consumer electronics, and beverage bottles.
With 63,000 employees in 31 countries across the world, Alcoa's Corporate Center is still firmly planted in Pittsburgh. The Company has nearly 2,000 people based in the Pittsburgh region who provide corporate services to our worldwide locations (just a block from where the G-20 Summit will be held) and who conduct research at the Alcoa Technical Center, the world's largest light metals research and development facility, just outside the city.
