Pittsburghers are Adopting Greener, Healthier Lifestyles with the Aid of Venture Outdoors, a Local Non-profit that Makes it Easy to Get Outside.
Pittsburgh may have earned itself a dirty reputation in the past, but today the city is undergoing a clean and green renaissance. Non-residents may scoff, but Pittsburghers are engaging in more outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship than ever before. Venture Outdoors is a non-profit organization that is making it easy for Pittsburghers to get outside by offering them an eclectic array of activities and programs. From kayaking and climbing to wine and cheese hikes, Venture Outdoors has something for every one of its 5,000 members and the community at large. These activities and programs are helping people live healthier, more active lifestyles.
Pittsburgh is poised to overcome its polluted past and become a leader in the green renaissance and outdoor recreation. Pittsburgh residents play a key role by adopting healthier and more active lifestyles. Pittsburghers walk or hike in the many area parks, including 5 large city parks, and bike the ever-expanding urban bike trails along all three of its rivers. The summer months find Pittsburghers gliding gracefully across the three rivers in bright yellow kayaks.
Venture Outdoors is helping Pittsburghers take advantage of the region's many natural amenities through a wide variety of activities and programs. Its 5,000 members are granted benefits like discounts at Kayak Pittsburgh, a project of Venture Outdoors, and member appreciation picnics. But everyone is encouraged to participate in Venture Outdoors outdoor programming regardless of member status. Activities like hiking, biking or back-packing challenge the most the ardent outdoor enthusiast. Quirky hikes like the upcoming wine and cheese hike offer reluctant participants an introduction to nature in a fun and non-threatening way.
Venture Outdoors is also reaching out to families in urban neighborhoods where outdoor recreation is not a high priority. Through its new Family and Community Programs initiative, Venture Outdoors is serving families from a variety of backgrounds by offering programs and free festivals in the communities where these families live.
