Milestone uses Innovation, Imagination to Provide Progressive Services for Behavioral Health and Intellectual Challenges

Synopsis
Founded in 1969, Milestone has evolved from a grassroots, family-driven initiative to a corporation that actively pursues innovation, risk-taking and use of state-of-the-art technology to drive optimum outcomes for its consumers. Annually serving 3,500 adults and children with behavioral health and intellectual challenges, Milestone demonstrates a true Western Pennsylvania entrepreneurial spirit in its approach to service delivery. Examples include the early adoption of an electronic clinical record-keeping system, technical assistance and training programs to disability service providers throughout Western Pennsylvania, and launching the area's only high-tech hydroponic greenhouse.

Overview
In 1969, a small group of parents of children and adults with mental disabilities "passed the hat" to pay the salary of the organization's first executive director. Since that day Milestone has evolved to become a diverse organization that actively pursues the most advanced technologies and strategies to support Western Pennsylvania's most vulnerable citizens.

Through a wide range of residential, vocational, clinical and advocacy services, Milestone meets the needs of 3,500 people annually with behavioral health and intellectual challenges. Milestone's willingness to experiment, take risks and develop new, improved ways to meet the needs of people with behavioral health and intellectual challenges is reflective of Pittsburgh's image as an area noted for progressive health care technologies and solutions for all residents.

Milestone demonstrated an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit through early adoption of integrated clinical electronic records for consumers. Milestone became the region's first organization to provide technical assistance and training to direct care professionals in 18 counties in Western Pennsylvania through Health Care Quality Units. In 2006 Milestone constructed and launched a social business venture: a 3,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse that produces specialty lettuce and employs people with disabilities. The greenhouse is a state-of-the art, high-tech operation that makes use of co-generation biofuel technology for energy efficiency and conservation. Milestone believes in "Helping Extraordinary People Live Ordinary Lives," a sentiment that all residents of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania embrace.
