Franktuary Brings Novel Dining Option Downtown and Supports Sustainable, Organic, Local Farming
Synopsis
Since 2004 Franktuary has served gourmet frankfurters from a storefront in the back of Trinity Cathedral on Oliver Avenue. The founders envisioned a place that would help revitalize the city through the creative reuse of an abandoned urban space, give back to its community, and contribute to making downtown Pittsburgh a vibrant and memorable place. In July of 2009 Franktuary began working with Ron Gargasz Organic Farm of Volant, PA, and introduced an organic, grass-finished, locally-raised, all-beef frankfurter to its menu. The purchase of such a product offers remarkable health and environmental benefits to the consumer and the region, respectively.
Overview
Since 2004 Franktuary has served gourmet frankfurters from a storefront in the back of Trinity Cathedral on Oliver Avenue. Still in their twenties, the founders envisioned a place that would help revitalize the city through the creative reuse of an abandoned urban space, give back to its community, and contribute to making downtown Pittsburgh a vibrant and memorable place. In July of 2009 Franktuary began working with Ron Gargasz Organic Farm of Volant, PA, and introduced an organic, grass-finished, nitrate-free, locally-raised, all-beef frankfurter to its menu.
Dubbed the Locavore, the purchase of such a product offers advantages beyond supporting sustainable farming practices and the regional economy: grass-fed beef offers a perfectly balanced ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids, a health benefit commonly associated with wild-caught seafood. When EFAs are consumed in proper balance the human body is less likely to experience inflammatory diseases. Ron Gargasz, a 30-year veteran of organic farming, has studied the EFA content of his beef in conjunction with Penn State University and knows its healthful ratio to be the direct result of raising cattle entirely on their natural diet of field grasses. Pasture-raised beef is also free of antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides.
The readers of Pittsburgh magazine have named Franktuary "Best Downtown Lunch Spot" for two consecutive years. The restaurant shares 1% of its profits with local community initiatives and 1% with the micro-lending website Kiva.org.
