Urban Youth Action Takes At-Risk Teens To Beijing as Part of Workforce Development Program

Synopsis
When Urban Youth Action, Inc. (UYA), started educating Pittsburgh-area youths about workforce development in 1966, no one foresaw that lessons in Mandarin and comparisons of the local and Beijing operations of Fortune 500 companies were about 43 years down the road. In 2009, UYA - a nonprofit whose mission is to empower at-risk youths in Allegheny County to be work-ready, life-prepared and community-minded - established the UYA International Education Project, taking 10 students from Pittsburgh-area high schools to Beijing to apply lessons learned locally to the global marketplace.

Overview

From January through May, students and their chaperones from the Pittsburgh Project and UYA prepared to spend two weeks in Beijing in June though weekly Asian culture and language training provided by the University of Pittsburgh's Center for International Studies, Global Studies and Asian Studies Departments. UYA also partnered with Alcoa, K&L Gates, PPG Industries and Westinghouse Electric Co. - Pittsburgh-area corporations with Beijing-area operations - to give students unique perspective on international business differences through presentations and tours locally and in China. Alcoa also arranged a visit to Tsinghua University, an academic partner for the global Alcoa Foundation Conservation & Sustainability Fellowship Program, which focuses on breakthrough research in conservation and sustainability.

Based in Downtown Pittsburgh, UYA is one of the nation's oldest workforce development programs for regional high school students. It prepares students for career success through academic enrichment, workforce preparation, financial literacy, life skills and community service programming.
