Pittsburgh's Bicycling Transformation
Synopsis
In the early 90's Bicycling Magazine put Pittsburgh on their list as one of the five worst cities in the U.S. for riding a bike. In April of this year GOOD Magazine recognized Pittsburgh as one of seven cities with the best "burgeoning bike scenes", evidence of the city's bicycle transformation. Among the reasons cited for the recent ranking: Pittsburgh appointed Pennsylvania's first bicycle and pedestrian coordinator; cycling infrastructure improvements, including 36 miles of bike lanes and trails; and the advocacy group Bike Pittsburgh, which more than quadrupled its membership to over 900 in three years.
Overview
In the early 90's Bicycling Magazine put Pittsburgh on their list as one of the five worst cities in the U.S. for riding a bike. In April of this year GOOD Magazine recognized Pittsburgh as one of seven cities with the best "burgeoning bike scenes", evidence of the city's bicycle transformation. Among the reasons cited for the recent ranking: Pittsburgh appointed Pennsylvania's first bicycle and pedestrian coordinator; cycling infrastructure improvements, including 36 miles of bike lanes and trails; and the advocacy group Bike Pittsburgh, which was founded in 2003 and more than quadrupled its membership to over 900 in three years.
Additionally through the work of BikePGH the city now has many miles of bike lanes, a signature bike rack, an award winning bicycle map, a beautifully illustrated bike commuting guide, and an annual ten day bicycle extravaganza known as BikeFest. Volunteers at Free Ride, the do-it-yourself recycled bike shop, teach bike maintenance skills that enable people of all ages to repair old bicycles, putting 500 back on the streets each year. Pittsburgh's terrain ranges from the flat banks of the Allegheny River to Canton Avenue, arguably among the steepest paved streets in the United States. The city's hills make for good mountain biking too. Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group emerged in 2001 to encourage IMBA style trails in conjunction with local land managers. Three nationally known cycling magazines -- Dirt Rag, Urban Velo, and Bicycle Times -- call the city home.
