Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Explores the Themes and Lessons of the Holocaust with Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project
Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project, November 12-15, 2009, is the centerpiece of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's 40th Anniversary Season. Originated by Ballet Austin, Light explores the themes of family, segregation, isolation and survival as it follows the experience of one Holocaust survivor. In close partnership with the Holocaust Center of the United Jewish Federation, this project seeks to raise community awareness, promote civic discourse and educate the public about the Holocaust and the consequences of hate through collaborations across a broad spectrum of the arts.

The lessons of the Holocaust have often found their most powerful expression through the arts. They reflect the individual and societal climate of a culture - its philosophy, emotions, events and social dynamics as seen through the eyes of the artists. A performing arts organization does not often have the opportunity to present a work portraying an event that has impacted multiple generations and cultures. Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project is one such work.
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and The Holocaust Center are taking a leadership role in organizing programming that will take place during the weeks preceding the Light ballet in collaboration with numerous Pittsburgh institutions and organizations, including Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, National Catholic Conference for Holocaust Education at Seton Hill University, The Senator John Heinz History Center, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Carnegie Mellon School of Music, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Chatham University Art Gallery and the Pittsburgh Agency for Jewish Learning, among others.
