The Smithsonian's home in Pittsburgh, the Senator John Heinz History Center Celebrates the Region's Transformation
Synopsis
The Heinz History Center, the largest history museum in Pennsylvania, includes six floors of permanent and changing exhibitions that tell the story of Western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1879, the History Center is proud to be the region's oldest cultural institution and features the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum and the Library and Archives. Housed in the former Chautauqua Lake Ice Company building, the History Center features an adaptive re-use of a former warehouse built in 1890. Now a LEED-certified building, the History Center is the largest green history museum in the United States.
Overview
Located just one block from the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, the History Center features several blockbuster exhibitions:
- Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation traces Western Pennsylvania's indelible imprint on both our nation and our world. The two-story, long-term exhibition features the stories of hundreds of people who have made an incredible impact on the world. Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation begins 16,000 years ago at Meadowcroft Rockshelter (the oldest site of human habitation in North America), and takes visitors through George Washington's first experiences in the French & Indian War, Lewis & Clark's groundbreaking expedition, and all the way to Pittsburgh's 21st century role as a leader in medicine, education, and robotics.
- The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a "museum within a museum," comprehensively presents Pittsburgh's remarkable sports story through hundreds of artifacts and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. The Sports Museum, which spans two floors, captures the glory of Super Bowl, World Series, and Stanley Cup victories. The grit and sweat of a high school football tradition that has produced nearly 50 pro quarterbacks. The stories of the first pro football game, the first World Series and our unmatched Negro League tradition. It's all here.
- Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War and Lincoln Slept Here, presented by PNC Financial Services Group, is a collaborative exhibition created by the History Center and the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The exhibition details how Lincoln's momentous struggle to save the Union transformed our nation, the Constitution, and himself. It focuses on several key struggles that Lincoln dealt with during his presidency, including secession, civil liberties, and slavery, while examining Lincoln's success in saving the nation.
