Overview
City Theatre, Pittsburgh's home for new and contemporary plays, established itself as a leader in the revitalization of the South Side after moving to the historic neighborhood in 1991. Now in its 35th year, City Theatre draws some 50,000 patrons annually to the South Side. The organization's audience energizes the local economy by spending an annual $5 million at nearby restaurants. City's very presence has contributed to a thriving restaurant scene, and the theatre has a history of successful restaurant partnerships, including the Cast of Caterers-restaurants that provide concessions in return for greater exposure to City's audience. City Theatre pioneered South Side redevelopment by converting the five buildings it occupies, including the innovative renovation and re-use of the former Bingham United Methodist Church.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Tracy Brigden, Managing Director Greg Quinlan, and a 45-member Board of Directors, City Theatre's mission is to provide an artistic home for the development and production of contemporary plays that engage a diverse audience. City Theatre regularly commissions new original work, including the world premieres of Christopher Durang's Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge, Eric Simonson's Speak American, and Jeffrey Hatcher's Compleat Female Stage Beauty, later adapted into the feature film Stage Beauty starring Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. Readers of Pittsburgh Magazine selected City Theatre as their favorite local theatre company in the 2009 "Best of Pittsburgh" issue.
