After a "green", Silver LEED®-awarded building expansion in 2004, the Museum experienced 170% growth in attendance and was able to provide space for two Pittsburgh Public School Head Start classrooms and five local organizations who work for or on behalf of children. The Museum further serves the community with its 15-year-old afterschool program and outreach programs.
Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is a vibrant place of learning and fun for families, known for its design excellence, partnerships and work in the community. Its many hands-on exhibits that spark curiosity, learning and laughter include Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, with the original Mister Rogers puppets, a multimedia art studio, a garage workshop for building and tinkering, and a waterplay area. After completing a "green", Silver LEED®-awarded building expansion in 2004, for which it earned the American Institute for Architects' Honor Award for Architecture and the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award, the Children's Museum enjoyed 170% growth in attendance. The expansion also allowed the Museum to provide office space for five local organizations who work for or on behalf of children, as well as two Pittsburgh Public School Head Start classrooms. Having these partners on site allows them to not only share Museum office space and basic services, but ideas and inspiration that lead to interesting and fruitful collaborations.
The Museum further serves as an oasis for families with tot classes and sessions on child development, as well as a YouthALIVE! afterschool program which has provided activities, employment, community service and mentorships for local youth for 15 years. The Museum extends its reach into the community with programs at local schools and festivals, collaborating with other Pittsburgh cultural institutions, and efforts such as helping to create the Family Activity Center at the Allegheny County Jail.
