Downtown Pittsburgh's Edgiest Gallery Exhibits Future Masters in Art and Technology
Synopsis
Where can you see the works by future masters who-rather than working in oil paints or sculpting marble-are participating in an art-and-technology renaissance so ahead of the curve and in left field that it's completely under the radar? The answer is Wood Street Galleries (WSG). Located on the second and third floors above a subway station, WSG is a project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, featuring multi-disciplinary artists from around the world. Many of the WSG artists present world premieres or North American debuts that often blend digital technologies, audio/visual innovations and interactive elements that challenge and thrill visitors.
Overview
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a catalyst for Downtown Pittsburgh's growing, robust visual arts scene. In the early 1990s, the Trust partnered with Pittsburgh's Port Authority to convert dormant office space above the Wood Street Transit Station into Wood Street Galleries-the Trust's inaugural visual arts project. It is worthy to note that all of the Trust's visual arts exhibits are free and open to the public.
Wood Street Galleries exhibits the work of multi-disciplinary artists from around the world. Guest artists have included Nam June Paik, Louise Bourgeois, Bill Viola, Jim Campbell and Kurt Hentschlager, to name a few.
Currently on display at Wood Street Galleries is the exhibition Physical Conditions, with works by Henrik Menné (Denmark), Donato Piccolo (Italy) and Marnix de Nijs + Edwin van der Heide (Netherlands). Physical Conditions comprises dramatic and powerful new installations that investigate robotic automation within traditional sculptural practices.
In addition to the gallery space for visual art exhibits, the Trust subsidizes two floors of office space to small, local arts organizations. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust takes great pride in offering highly subsidized space to artists so they can invest more time and resources into their core artistic missions.
