Promoting Diversity and Cross-cultural Awareness of Asia and Asian-Americans through the Arts

Synopsis
Silk Screen brings Southwestern Pennsylvania residents and visitors vibrant multicultural experiences through a unique, annual International film festival and year-round performing arts programming. Silk Screen presents include local, national, and international Asian and Asian American artists, musicians and dancers to schools, universities, museums and other venues across the region.

By exposing audiences to unique and exciting cultural experiences, Silk Screen brings together the region's diverse ethnic communities. Through the media of film, music, dance, and theater, these communities are able to learn and experience each other's cultures and come to recognize our shared human experience.

Overview
Silk Screen brings together the region's diverse ethnic communities through cultural events with focus on Asia.

Silk Screen's Goals:

  • To foster understanding across lines of race, ethnicity, and culture;
  • To help make Pittsburgh a cosmopolitan, economically robust city;
  • To make Pittsburgh THE DESTINATION for Asian cultural events;

Silk Screen Shares Diversity!
An Asian cultural exchange could become a fixture on the region's cultural landscape. Studies show there is a direct link between international, ethnic and cultural diversity and broader economic development in the region.

Silk Screen Encourages Immigration!
As Asian students flock to Pittsburgh's Universities and hospitals, the new renaissance of the region welcomes new immigrants. Providing a strong cultural atmosphere that makes new immigrants feel at home will help the region grow. Pittsburgh's economic prosperity at the turn of the 20th century came about, in part, because of its willingness to welcome immigrant populations. Today, immigrants from Asia will usher Pittsburgh into the 21st century.

Silk Screen is Successful!
Silk Screen has achieved remarkable success in its first four years. It has partnered with more than 30 arts and culture organizations. It has built a strong and diverse audience and volunteer base. In 2009 more than 5,000 attendees to date have supported our year round Asian arts events.
