Overview
Founded in 1997, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre (PICT) is the third-largest theatre company in the Pittsburgh area. PICT's mission is to provide thought-provoking, accessible and challenging theatre based on (though not limited to) classical and Irish dramatic literature. With an operating budget of just over $1 million, PICT is a lean and entrepreneurial company with a fiercely devoted following. In addition to bringing international artists of the highest caliber such as Alan Stanford and Tom Kilroy to Pittsburgh, PICT hires primarily local actors, designers and technical personnel, making it more viable for artists to live and work in Pittsburgh. Recent awards include: 2007 Performer of the Year, Pittsburgh Post Gazette, actor David Whalen for his work in 4 PICT productions; Best Female Performer, Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Abby Ahmad for PICT's 2007 one-woman show Nine Parts of Desire; Most Memorable Theater Event of 2007, Tribune-Review, for The Lieutenant of Inishmore; Theatre of the Year, Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 2006 and 2004; 2008 Top 10 theatrical events, Synge Cycle, Tribune-Review; top locally-produced play of 2008, Post-Gazette, for King Lear. PICT is a Small Professional Theatre (SPT) affiliated with Actors' Equity Association, and a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group (TCG) and the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. PICT is the Professional Theatre in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh.
