Multi-discipline Performing Arts Venue Hosts Drag Queens, Dramatic Plays, Rock Stars and Civic-minded Geeks

Synopsis
The New Hazlett Theater is a multi-use performing arts space renovated and newly re-opened in 2006. Tucked away in a Richardsonian-style building with an austere, church-like exterior, the New Hazlett Theater is a gem of a gritty, raw, blackbox stage. Formerly the pulpit of evangelists, Pittsburgh artists and arts organizations channel the snake-charmer vibe and present creative work in dance, music, theater, performance art, and spoken word. The New Hazlett Theater nurtures the arts, providing technical, moral, and financial support.

Overview
The New Hazlett Theater is a multi-use performing arts space renovated and newly re-opened in 2006. Tucked away in a Richardsonian-style building with an austere, church-like exterior, the New Hazlett Theater is a gem of a gritty, raw, blackbox stage. Formerly the pulpit of evangelists, Pittsburgh artists and arts organizations channel the snake-charmer vibe and present creative work in dance, music, theater, performance art, and spoken word. The New Hazlett Theater nurtures the arts, providing technical, moral, and financial support. The energetic staff is superb, and the venue was called "second best in the world" by a visiting performance group from Australia.

Genres presented at the New Hazlett Theater run the gamut of performance festivals, theater works, modern/contemporary dance seasons and full-scale rock ‘n' roll concerts. We have had quilt shows, literary readings, drag queens, anti-violence forums, art installations, and musicals. A late night music series provides a casual environment to enjoy a drink and catch some of Pittsburgh's up-and-coming musical talent.

The organizational structure of this non-profit entity is unusual, comprised of representatives of neighboring institutions challenged to create a new life for what was a vacant theater just four years ago. The Children's Museum, Warhol Museum, City of Pittsburgh and Northside Leadership Conference founded the New Hazlett Theater and secured $2.5 million for renovations and start-up operations.
