Mary Miller Dance Co is Celebrating 25 years of Doing Modern Dance in Pittsburgh
Miller Dance, now in its 25th consecutive year of presenting modern dance performances, is the oldest single artist vision, modern dance company in Pittsburgh. The Company reflects the dancing style of its founder, Artistic Director and Choreographer Mary Miller, whose works reflect on our daily urban life and today's social, psychological and political issues. Her distinct choreographic compositions are of people and their interactions with space, time and each other. The Pittsburgh Press declares, "(Miller's) trademark of abandoning a movement phrase in midstream... leaves the audience suspended in expectation and slightly out of breath."
Miller Dance has been a pioneer in the Pittsburgh area. Since its beginnings, the company has brought new experiences to Pittsburgh audiences year after year for 25 years in a row.
- The Company was the first to bring "site-specific" performances into buildings in downtown Pittsburgh. The Company shocked lunchtime crowds while dancing in the elevator in Oxford Center and the revolving door at the Vista Hotel (Doubletree Hotel), or the PPG Plaza or Mellon Square, etc.
- The Company was the first to present multi disciplinary performances. Miller has collaborated with poets, composers, fiber artists, writers and sculptors.
- The Company was the first to address socio-political issues through dance. Through Peace 2001 Miller explored social justice issues that deter peace in our days.
- In addition the Company offers outreach programs for special needs populations, including the deaf and hard of hearing, through the company's Moving for Life!TM program.
Moving For Life!TM is a flexible and adaptable program in which the participant's abilities and progress dictate the program schedule. Throughout the program participants gain hands-on experience in modern dance movements and concepts, while developing a positive self-assurance of their abilities. The program provides participants with new ways to experience movement in relation to time, space and with each other.
