Pittsburgh has Become Home to One of the Most Organic, Grass-roots World Music Movements: Global Beats

The world music culture in Pittsburgh has been growing, thanks to a movement known as Global Beats. Founded in 2004 by WRCT 88.3 FM Brazilian show host, Carla Leininger, Global Beats was created to foster multicultural exchanges and to be an agent of social change through the sounds and fusion of world music. Through strategic partnerships with PUMP (Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project) and GSFA (Guitar Society of Fine Arts), Global Beats has earned grants from the Heinz Endowments and the Multicultural Arts Initiative, to present world music acts of great quality, which demonstrate how Pittsburgh is a cutting-edge hub of culture, creativity and collaboration.

Global Beats has woven itself organically into the unique fabric of Pittsburgh. Its focus is on social change and the integration of cultures and community groups through music. The event lends itself to the ethnic, international, and collective populations in search of a social setting that enables them to network, mingle, and enjoy music and cultures from around the world. Global Beats is dedicated to being a part of the livelihood of Pittsburgh by nurturing world music awareness and diversity and by working with various groups such as Colombia en Pittsburgh, Center for Asian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, CMU’s Graduate Student Organization, Global Links and Pitt’s African Student Society, among many others.

Achievements:

  • In 2006 Global Beats gained the support of the Putumayo World Music Label, one of the strongest world music labels in the industry.
  • In 2008 Global Beats and PUMP presented the best attended “Stay and Play Friday” with the performances of acclaimed artists from New York, Nation Beat, and from Miami, Javier Garcia.
  • In 2008 it joined forces with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and presented the first Global Beats New Year’s Bash in the heart of the Cultural District, bringing New York’s Afro-Beat Orchestra, Kokolo, and a Brazilian carnaval celebration at midnight.
