Father Ryan Arts Center: Where Ideas and Action Collide, and Learning and Purpose Take Flight
Housed in a renovated, former furniture store built in the 1930s, the Father Ryan Arts Center of Focus On Renewal is a multi-level facility with a vision of creating an environment that reaffirms the area’s traditions while expanding the region’s cultural and artistic opportunities, especially for low income individuals and families. It accomplishes this vision by presenting interdisciplinary arts programming, live theater productions and unique exhibits. Located at 420 Chartiers Avenue in McKees Rocks (just minutes from Downtown), it is the largest community-based arts facility west of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County.
Focus On Renewal has worked for the past five years to emphasize the importance of the arts through the promotion and appreciation of creative expression. In keeping with this vision, the Father Ryan Arts Center offers art classes and workshops for children and adults, in addition to hosting concerts, live theater, music and dance recitals and gallery shows to serve as a source of inspiration and education to enhance the quality of life for residents throughout the region. The arts center features 26,000 sq. feet of contemporary art space with soaring ceilings, tile and hardwood floors, and abundant natural lighting.
"Just like the arts, this center is for everyone," said Father Regis Ryan, executive director of Focus On Renewal.
FRAC programs offer additional opportunities that nurture the creative voice of underserved populations resulting in envisioned and inspired members of society. The introduction of community arts classes has led to increased cultural awareness among residents and inspired many to participate and inquire about further development of artistic interests.
In partnership with many of Focus on Renewal’s other programs, the Father Ryan Arts Center hopes to be a source of inspiration and influence for the entire region by providing cross-cultural and inter-generational arts programming. Focus On Renewal has a strong history of successful social-service programs and the addition of an arts center has helped breathe new life and vitality into a community struggling with unemployment, industry decline and economic disparity.
