The arts are a key strategy in transforming the region, with shining examples in communities like the North Side, Lawrenceville, Penn Avenue, the Cultural District, Braddock and South Side. These cultural communities are essential to the region's quality of life and are evidence of the vital impact of the arts in the Pittsburgh region.
The nonprofit arts and cultural industry in Allegheny County generates $341 million in economic activity and supports over 10,000 full-time equivalent jobs. Revenues of nearly $34 million are generated through local and state tax.
One visit to Pittsburgh and you'll see why the city is consistently ranked among the top arts destinations in the country. Stroll along Liberty and Penn Avenues in the Cultural District to check out Wood Street Galleries, SPACE, Future Tenant and other cutting-edge galleries.
On the North Side, you'll find the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild featuring year-round art exhibitions. In the 16:62 Design Zone - which stretches from the Strip District to Lawrenceville - be sure to check out the Society for Contemporary Craft and plenty more galleries along Butler Street. And mark your calendar for the last weekend in April for Art All Night, an annual 24-hour arts marathon where there's no fee, no jury and no censorship.
Held every June in Downtown Pittsburgh, the Three Rivers Arts Festival quickly grew from the "little outdoor art show" in 1960 to the region's largest multidisciplinary showcase of visual art and performing arts.
In the East End neighborhoods, there's the Pittsburgh Glass Center. You won't want to miss the Silver Eye Center for Photography on the South Side or Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Shadyside.
