Overview
Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center, the venue for September's G-20 Summit, is the world's first certified green convention center and is the largest LEED® Gold-certified building in the world. Products manufactured by Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries contribute substantially to the center's sustainable status, including solar control glass, and advanced coatings and paint.
The convention center is one of the foremost examples of a single building that integrates the spectrum of architectural glass, coatings and paints manufactured by PPG Industries, drawing on several products from the PPG collection of EcoLogical Building Solutions. The entire exhibit hall can be lit entirely through skylights and windows fabricated from PPG Solarban 60 Solar Control Low-E Coated Glass.
Combined with the ventilation system and natural light transmission, the solar control of Solarban 60 glass enables the center to consume about 35 percent less energy than a standard building of its size, resulting in more than $50,000 or 3.8 million kilowatts of energy savings per year.
PPG coatings and paint are instrumental to the building's performance. On the metal building panels and skylights, various shades of Duranar coatings provide extended durability, which reduces the need for repainting and other maintenance. Indoors, zero- and low-emitting paints and coatings such as Pittsburgh Paints' Pure Performance paint reduce exposure to airborne toxins and deliver a healthful and attractive environment. The materials used to construct the building have recycled content and were mostly manufactured within a 500-mile radius of Pittsburgh.
EcoLogical Building Solutions, Solarban, Duranar and Pure Performance are trademarks of PPG Industries, Inc.
