Overview
Established in 1998, Sustainable Pittsburgh (SP) was an outcome of the Pittsburgh visit of the President's Council on Sustainable Development whereby a committee of civic leaders organized several days of community visioning around introducing concepts of sustainability to the region. SP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, affects decision-making in the Pittsburgh region to integrate economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality bringing sustainable solutions to communities and businesses.

SP has been a key contributor to elevating understanding of how social, environmental, and economic issues cannot be viewed in silos but rather must be addressed in a systems vs. symptoms approach. SP's four-person team has proven adept at building a regional movement on issues that get at the heart of sustainability for southwestern Pennsylvania including:

  1. Smart Growth and integration of Transportation and Land Use; Fix It First
  2. Outdoor Recreation and Natural Amenities

  4. Public Transportation and Transportation for Livable Communities
  5. Sustainable Business Solutions Consultancy
  6. Sustainable Community Solutions Consultancy
  7. Civic Engagement and Education (workshops, conferences, annual summits, weekly newsletters)

SP focuses on sustainable development for the region through policy and practice by government and business. The organization is known for its integrity, collaborative approach, and compassion for Southwestern PA. A trusted advisor (non-partisan + fact-based), SP works to effect systemic change at scale - for the region.
